Digging has commenced on a 1.8km tunnel underneath London Heathrow Airport's airfield, bringing plans for the world's largest integrated baggage handling system one step closer to fruition.
The tunnel, which will cost £260 million to complete, will link terminals three and five and will eventually link into the existing baggage tunnel network, enabling the airport to handle 110 million bags annually by 2012.
The new tunnel is the keystone of a £900m baggage overhaul plan, which includes a new system at T3 and a refurb of T1 and T4.
